Did you know that when you make a turn, the inside tires turn at a slower pace than the outside tires? Surprisingly, all tires act independently during every activity. This is where the importance of differential fluid comes into play – your tires need to be able to act independently of each other and at different speeds to execute seemingly simple actions like turning a corner.
In this case, we are talking about rear differentials, which your car as if it is a rear-wheel drive. When you have an RWD, your car is using engine power to move just the 2 back tires – coincidentally where your differential will also be found and mounted.
Within the differential, there is a fluid made and designed specifically for that part and its functionality. The gears and bearings found within the differential need to be properly lubricated to be able to transfer power in a seamless fashion.
Differential problems can stem from bearings coming loose or if the differential fluid has thinned out too much, causing the metal to grind on itself.
Differential fluid and usage are so unique to each vehicle and driver based on habits. We highly recommend getting your differential fluid inspected and changed at a regular interval. Recommendations can, as always, be found in your owner’s manual. Our team is happy to discuss any further concerns or questions about appropriate intervals as well.
